Four/Four in Collaboration with Beam Editions presents *A Study by Catrin Morgan.
A Study is a series of forty small drawings, paintings, collages, a book-work and essay that reinterprets and deconstructs the painting St. Jerome in His Study by the Italian Renaissance master Antonello da Messina.
Painted between 1460–1475 this curious painting shows St Jerome studying in a strange, open structure with a built in desk, shelves and archways. ‘A Study’ is a ‘typology’ of forms and symbols found in Messina’s painting and other depictions of St Jerome throughout history.
St Jerome is best known for his translation of the Bible from Hebrew into Latin in Bethlehem circa 382-405. Morgan’s drawings further explore the idea of translation such as shifting compositions from standard perspectives to isomorphic.
These delicate, colourful and minimal works were first presented at Dalla Rosa, London in July 2018 and are being reinterpreted with an entirely new installation for 4/4 across two rooms.
The show includes a book-work, ‘Studies for Studies’ which is an edition of 5 produced at the Women’s Studio Workshop New York and another book-work Jerome’s Study, a collaboration between prize-winning author Max Porter and artist Catrin Morgan which is available for £15.
Catrin Morgan is a Nottingham born, New York based artist. She studied Fine Art at Leeds Metropolitan and recently completed a PHD in Visual Communication at the Royal College of Art.
